Tim is a customer service agent for a large computer manufacturer. For the past 3 years, his job has been to answer inbound customer phone calls regarding hardware issues with customers’ computers and work to solve said issues. Tim’s company recently relocated him from San Francisco to Memphis and transitioned him from dealing with hardware issues to software issues. Since the move, his new manager has informed Tim that his performance is not acceptable and that he must do better. However, Tim feels that his declining performance is due to the poor training he received for his new job, the lack of specific feedback on his performance, and the fact that he does not enjoy his new position in dealing with software issues. He was not assigned a mentor and did not attend any type of training class, but was simply thrown into the position and expected to learn “on-the-job”. Due to this ambiguity, Tim is not certain what needs to be done to improve his performance. Despite his daily frustration, Tim cannot afford to lose his job so he still makes an attempt each day to be pleasant with customers and handle their issues the best he can.
