DePaul University Montgomery Bus Boycott Movement Building Analysis

For this paper you will use the “Choosing an Issue checklist and the “Strategy Chart” (link to book is below) found in Bobo, Kendall and Max to analyze the Montgomery Bus Boycott. You will specifically be exploring the ways in which: the issue was chosen, the strategy developed, the tactics used. You may want to look at additional information on the bus boycott.

Once you complete your analysis, you will reflect on the legacy of the civil rights movement using the readings from Richie “How We Won the Mainstream but Lost the Movement” (article attached below please read it) and explore the ways in which systems advocacy, political advocacy/legislative reform and social service institutionalization impacted the Anti-violence movement.

Your paper should contain the following information using headings to label each of the four (4) items:

  • Part 1: Choosing an Issue
    • Application of the “Choosing an Issue” checklist (p. 27) – How was the issue chosen?
      • Address all items, with emphasis on the first three (see pages 9-10): Does it result in real improvement in people’s lives? Does it give people a sense of their own power?  Does it alter power relationships?
  • Part 2: Strategy Chart & Tactics
    • Application of the “Strategy Chart” – In this narrative, describe how strategy was developed and what tactics were used.
  • Part 3: Leadership
    • How were leaders identified and recruited? What were their tasks?
  • Part 4: Personal Lessons Learned
    • Reflect on what you learned about maintaining the goals and ideals of a movement based on your Richie reading about the anti-violence movement (as a legacy of the civil rights movement) Reflect on the ways movements can be vulnerable to co-optation and what lessons/skills you want to take away (and remember) from the readings.
