HUS 2315 St Petersburg College Examples of Operant Conditioning Responses

Post A)

This video provides examples of all four quadrants of training for operant conditioning. She speaks mainly about training in regards to K9’s, more specifically working K9’s, but these techniques can be applied to all dogs. It’s quite interesting to me to think about how this aspect of psychology can be applied to so many species with all different levels of cognitive functioning. In the beginning the dogs behaviors are shaped in a purely positive way with positive reinforcement. Once it is clear that the dog understands the commands they can then train the dog to understand the stimulation provided by the ecollar for negative reinforcement as well as positive punishment. In the same way, in this video, the pigeon or toy was given to the dog for positive reinforcement and taken away for negative punishment.

Note: In my opinion it is important to realize that these are professional trainers who first teach the dog what the stimulation means instead of blindly stimulating the dog without them understanding resulting in them being confused. I am by no means recommending that anyone put an ecollar on their dog and just starting stimulating them. It is important to seek proper training from experts.

This article explains in easy language how operant conditioning can be applied in real life. It gives real life examples and explains why and how they work. It gives examples for positive and negative reinforcements and also negative and positive punishments. I really liked that the article was written so that it was easier to understand and in language that is not so scientific.
