“I will be talking about social contract ethics. I chose to talk about this form of ethics because as a society people need to understand and comes to terms with a number of set rules so everyone could live peacefully in a society. “The social contract theory says that people who live together in society in accordance with an agreement that establishes moral and political rules of behavior. Some people believe that if we live according to a social contract, we can live morally by our own choice and not because a divine being requires it” (Social contract theory, 2021). In the John Doe scenario listed above, John Doe downloaded copyright textbooks to her phone using an app that disguises her phone so it’s not able to be traced back to her. According to the social contract theory, there are laws and rules set in place for reasons. If there are no rules and laws that would encourage people to do anything they wanted without consequences. Everyone goes through some type of struggle economically and you always try to find a way to make ends meet. But just because of your financial status does not mean you can bend the rules and laws and download something illegally. In the scenario, John Doe’s religion stated that it forbids him to use the application to download anything. There were many other ways John Doe could’ve gotten access to the book. I understand that John Doe was going through something and needed help financially and was not able to get an expensive book but that does not make it ethically right to download something that breaks the rules and laws that are set. “
