Grossmont College Letter from The Alabama Clergymen Discussion

Now that you’ve read and analyzed the “Letter from the Alabama Clergymen”  https://ibs.cru.org/files/7814/9063/9009/Letter_Bi… I want you to discuss the rhetoric you saw them using.

Once you’ve posted your notes, reply to one (1) other student’s post.

To do this, you can fill out an argument map (with at least one column discussing a claim, evidence, strategy, audience, and effectiveness), or you can simply write your notes in paragraph form.

You should discuss:

  1. Project:
    • Topic, Purpose, Method of Delivery
  2. Argument: What is their main (overall) argument?
  3. Claim: list at least one claim they use to support their argument. Provide a quote from the text.
  4. Evidence: for the claim you have listed above, what type of evidence did the clergymen use? (historical example, numerical, anecdote, etc.)
  5. Strategy: for the claim listed above, what type of strategy did the clergymen use? (one of the appeals, identification, compare & contrast, prolepsis, etc.)
  6. Who was their primary audience?
  7. Do you think the type of evidence and the strategy they used effectively convinced the audience? Why or why not?

  1. The main topic of this paper is to represent the unfair treatment towards African American. The purpose is to motivate other people of color to stand up and fight for their rights and equal treatment. The method of delivery regarding this article is by first discussing the issue and then leading to a suggestion or call to action.
  2. The main argument is to show people that African Americans had to take matters in their own hands because if not they would be able to gain any equal rights.
  3. A claim that is listed in this letter is about how violence is needed to make progress about equal rights. For example, on page 4, King claims that “My friends, I must say to you that we have not made a single gain in civil rights without legal and nonviolent pressure”.
  4. The type of evidence that the clergymen use is historical example. King mentioned what had occurred in the past and how violence was needed.
  5. The type of strategy that the clergymen use is pathos. It seems as if King was trying to affect his audience on an emotional level to explain the severity of the situation.
  6. In my opinion, the primary audience of this text are the clergymen.
  7. Yes, I believe that the type of evidence and strategy that were utilized is effective and convincing because it informed the audience the unfair treatment and how African American are very determined to correct what is wrong.

The topic is the protests in Alabama. The purpose of the letter is to solve the racial issues in Alabama and stops the protests. The delivery method is a written letter. Next, their main argument, they did not agree with the protests, but they agreed with stopping the racial issue, which is everyone’s responsibility. They claim, “All of us need to face that responsibility and find proper channels for its accomplishment.” They use a quote from their formerly pointed to support their claim, “Just as we formerly pointed out that ‘hatred and violence have no sanction in our religious and political tradition.’” This is an appeal logos strategy. Their primary audience was Dr. Martin Luther King. I think the type of evidence and the strategy they used are convinced the audience because they used the appeal of logs by using citations, and informed opinions when they said “we believe…” Also, ethos appeals by using background information to build credibility and emphasize their argument. They used appeal pathos as well by using sympathy to end the racial issue.
