HS 3440 Medicare Insurance Coverage for Seniors Discussion
One of the responsibilities of a health educator is to serve as a resource person. Often, being a resource person entails working to “make the complicated simple”. Being a resource person can also comprise being keenly knowledgeable about a particular health area in order to be able to answer questions or direct people to specific services that will serve their needs. For this DB activity, you will practice a bit of what it takes to fulfill the responsibility of being a health resource person. In this case, a resource person for someone approaching age 65 who needs to make a decision about Medicare coverage.
To accomplish the overarching goal, this DB activity will be both an exercise in navigating the Medicare government website, as well as, a discussion about the best Medicare insurance coverage for seniors starting at age 65.
For your Initial Post:
- Access the Medicare website at http://www.medicare.gov/medicare-and-you/medicare-and-you.html (Links to an external site.) , click around and explore the site. Next, navigate to this page and read about the different Medicare plan options. Here is the link http://www.medicare.gov/sign-up-change-plans/decide-how-to-get-medicare/your-medicare-coverage-choices.html (Links to an external site.) (Consider what it would be like for a senior or an elder to try to navigate this site in order to find this page!) Additional note: You may wish to supplement your investigation and navigation of the Medicare website by using the website search engine in the top left corner. For example, you may wish to enter a search term such as “Medicare Advantage Plans” and see the results list for the best information. You may have to visit several results from your search results to gain a complete picture before you complete your investigation of plans and make your initial post on the DB.
- After you have read through the options for Medicare coverage, and the instructions for how one should go about deciding on the appropriate Medicare plan, post which plan you believe would be best for a senior approaching the age of 65 and why. Be sure to include the following elements: cost; limitations; whether married couples, widows, widowers, or single seniors makes a difference in choosing the best plan; what happens if you choose a Medicare Advantage Plan instead of the government’s Medicare plan.
- Describe what plan you would recommend to person 65 years of age or older, and why you would recommend the plan (Medicare traditional or a Medicare Advantage insurance plan from a private insurance company such as Humana or Aetna).
For your response:
- Pair up with just one other classmate and discuss your findings.
- In a back and forth conversation compare what you found on the website, and the the reasons for choosing the plan you thought would be best. In particular, what were your key decision points for choosing the plan you did? Did your classmate notice something you missed? Would you choose the same plan or not? Why?
- Talk and decide between the two of you what would be 2-key points to listen for if you were working with a senior or an elder to help them make a “right” decision about a plan.
- Talk to one another about what you learn from talking about your findings together.
