The British Parliament believed American colonies should pay for the French and Indian War (Seven Years War). After all, taxes were considerably lower in the colonies and the standard of living was higher than in the mother country. The colonists believed all laws pertaining to America; especially those regarding taxes should be enforced by a representative legislation. Without representation in parliament, but still not paying the equivalent taxes of Britain, were the colonists truly justified in separating from England?
