Aberystwyth University Leadership Development Plan Essay

When interviewing for employment, you will be asked to discuss your leadership experiences, skills and strengths with the hiring manager.  To help you formulate your responses to these questions and to create a clear plan for developing and enhancing your personal leadership skills your final assignment will be to create you Leadership Portfolio.

To begin to help you build your personal leadership, throughout this course you have been asked to complete eight (8) different self-assessments.  This information will be used to help you in creating your personal development plan.

Your portfolio must include the following information:

1. Your personal definition of leadership

2. Your leadership philosophy

3. Your personal mission statement–you must discuss why this personal statement is meaningful to you and how it will help guide your leadership in the future.

4. Summary of your leadership experiences–you must discuss the leadership experiences or positions that you have held to date along with an explanation of their learning and skill development as a result of these experiences.  Please remember that leadership positions do not have to be formalized leadership positions in a business setting.  If you are a parent, you’re a leader in your own family.  If you’ve held a leadership position in your Parent Teacher Organization or church, these are also leadership positions.

5. Leadership Development Plan–the information for this area can be derived from the different assessments you have completed within the course.  Additionally, please use self-reflection to assess your strengths and areas that you feel need strengthening as a leader.  In reviewing the behaviors and traits of a leader you’ve learned within this course, do you already possess these behaviors and traits?  In reviewing the different leadership models, do you already employ them?  Additionally, you must discuss what leadership experiences you still need to have so you develop as a leader and/or describe the experiences that might help you to continue to develop as a leader.  To help you recognize areas that could need further development, consider the following questions:

Do you need any specific skills to be a leader in your field?

How can you gain these skills?

  • What resources do you need to work on to develop these skills?
  • Do you need a mentor in a specific area?  How can you identify a mentor and get them excited about taking you on as a mentee?
  • How will you track your progress regarding your leadership development?  Remember the SMART goals?  Within your plan, be specific, be motivating, make your plan actionable, make your plan realistic, and make your plan time-bound (use the time frame of 3-5 years).
