For your post: After you’ve viewed the Frontline documentary, “Being Mortal” and read Atul Gawande’s article, “Letting Go,” share one thing that really affected you as you thought through decisions about dying. Share why this particular information (or observation) resonated with you.
For your responses: After reading your classmate’s post, consider how what you’ve learned from this assignment has added to your perspective on the dying process. Identify one specific thing you may do differently as a result, if you are faced with the impending death of yourself or a loved one.

Chapter 13 Discussion
One thing that really stuck out to me within the article was the question the author asked, “what would you tell your doctors to do” if you were on death’s bed but didn’t want to lose the battle? Also, this wasn’t in the article, but I read something that went, “this man was living his final days out in the hospital, and all he could think about was healthcare costs and being a burden to his family”. It’s extremely saddening to think about, but it happens all too commonly. Money has always been an issue in my family, especially when one of us is sick or injured, we almost never go to the hospital because it’s expensive. I usually push the topic of death to the far back of my mind, but now it’s forcing you to think about your experience, others, and who the stories are talking about. It makes you think about what /would/ you do if you were in this position, and it’s hard to come up with a solution that doesn’t involve money.

Being Mortal
This documentary and article brings you a sense of uncertainty within your own life. It reminded me that everyones days are numbered and when that day comes you may not be prepared for it. The woman in the hospital that was telling the doctors about how she had to get her granddaughter to Disney World is one of the patients that really stuck out to me. She stated how she feels that she has to get better, she needs to take this trip, and how her life cannot end right now. Even with that state of mind, with still so many plans left for herself and her family, and such a will to live, she still sadly passes away. There are times in my own life where I feel stuck but I always seem to find a way through it all. Death is something I don’t think about often being so young with so many plans for my future. It was eye opening seeing people, although older than myself, having similar plans for their future and having them cut short with little notice and no way around it.
