NUR 1055 NCC Civility in The Healthcare Developmental Psychology Discussion

Discussion Options Menu: Forum

As you’ve been reading since chapter 3, our sense of ourselves as a gendered person is a psychological process that is strongly influenced by socialization. In this discussion forum, we will examine different aspects of living a gendered life. We will include sexuality in this discussion.

For your post:

1) Select a specific topic that interests you about gender (and sexuality if you wish). Some ideas for topics:

  • growing up female in a developing country
  • the interaction of gender and race/ethnicity
  • being gender queer or transgender (in the U.S. or elsewhere)
  • socialization about sexuality based on gender
  • LGBT and gender
  • gender and mental health
  • gender and sexual health
  • control over reproduction (in the U.S. or elsewhere)

2) Locate a reputable source on your topic. We define a reputable source as one that meets all three of the following criteria:

  • Authored by individual professional author(s) or professional organization in a field relevant to developmental psychology
  • The source is sufficiently formal, designed for a professional audience (not a blog or other type of “pop psych” piece)
  • The author’s own sources are clearly identified in a reference list within the publication.

3) Share information from your source in your post. Include a reference for your source in APA style.

For your responses:

Discuss how the information in your classmate’s post has informed your view of that topic. Is it consistent with what you’ve witnessed or experienced in your own life? If not, explain why you think your own experience differs.

first student: Gender Inequality in Developing Countries

COLLAPSE

The topic I chose is gender inequality in developing countries. In developing countries they tend to favor the males for many things such as education, health, employment and many more. Many developing countries do not encourage women to strive for any level of education because they believe woman are only good for certain things and getting an education is usually not on the list. Although for many of these developing countires it depends on the economic growth of the particular country or the financial capabilities of a certain family and if they are able to afford school. As for health, women have a longer life expectancy then men, but this female advantage is somewhat smaller in poor countries(Jayachandran, 2017). A huge factor in dealing with the health of women in these countries can be when women have children they may not be able to afford going to the hospital or any medication they may need. Employment for women in developing countries is very rare just like education. For example, India stands out for the underrepresentation of women in the labor force; men are three times as likely as women to be working(Jayachandran, 2017). Only in richer countires do the peoples view on women in the workplace differ than they do in developing countries. In developing countires it can be hard to live in general but even worse to be living in them as a woman.

In the article, it talks about depression and anxiety in all ages. Women are more likely to be stressed and depressed. Girls have lower self esteems rather than men. I personally have witnessed it and have dealt with it in my younger years of age. Especially in middle school I was bullied a lot and I have gone through a bunch of changes. I honestly didn’t know how to control myself and talk to somebody because I felt like nobody else went through it.
