Los Angeles Valley College Accommodating Disabilities Paper

 

The purpose of this assignment, completed weekly, is to allow you to examine, analyze and share your perceptions of the experiences of people with disabilities, their portrayal in the public media, and some of the services provided to them.  Each week’s fieldwork relates to the current or a recent topic discussed in class.  

This week: You will explore a college campus and evaluate how well it accommodates individuals with disabilities.

Skills

The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course / in school / in this field / in professional life beyond school: 

  • MLO #1.5: Analyze in implications of societal views of disability from the perspectives of able-bodied people and people with disabilities.

Knowledge

This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline: 

  • Course Objective 1: Analyze and discuss disability as a socially, medically and culturally determined construct

Tasks

1. Download and read ADA Across Campus

2. Walk around a university campus, paying attention to how the campus accommodates students with disabilities.  Notice the visible types of disabilities students have.  Pay attention to the buildings, the grounds, and the parking lots. What do you notice? What does the campus do, and not do, for students with disabilities?  

3. Using your smartphone create a brief video that highlights your observations.  Be sure to narrate your video!
