One of the prime factors in early social skill development is attachment. From birth, infants begin moving their bodies in rhythm of someone talking to them, even if they are not quite aware that they are moving their bodies in the first place. Imitation is another major social skill that begins to develop within the first few weeks after birth. Example of such imitation include actions such as closing their eyes, rubbing their face, or sticking out their tongue. Social exchanges between infants and adults include smiling within a few weeks of birth. Social skills also include showing fear and anxiety to strangers or adults they may not feel comfortable around.

Learning to cope with feelings and emotions is crucial to proper development in young children. Trust helps children identify whether their environment can be seen in their eyes as a good or bad environment. Trust is gained when infants needs are met and they are cared for in a consistent pattern and environment as well as with the same caregiver to get them used to the person they are around all of the time. Separation is also another form of social skill that is learned from birth as they get used to the adults that are constantly around them and taking care of them. An example of this would be a child beginning to scream and cry when their parent drops them off at school or daycare when they have never been far from there parents since they were born. The caregiver can explain in a soothing voice that it is going to be alright, that they had to go to work and that they will be back later to pick them up. Emotions are how children express how they are feeling as well as their experiences even before they begin to make physical movements or even make advanced sounds such as words.

Guidance and discipline are a way for the children to learn how to use and manage their social skills in certain experiences and times of the day. If a child wants a toy and another child has it, the social skill that can be used here is to get another toy and play with the child until the other child is done with that toy to avoid any conflict with the children around them. If the caregiver is teaching children how to manage their emotions as well as guiding them to the right emotion for the proper time, the child will learn more way to help them manage, use, and further develop their social skills.

Examples of early social skills are when children take the initiative to socialize with people, when they begin to participate in activates due to being on a predictable schedule. Sometimes children will begin a physical activity in order to get adults to participate because they like it. Children have to learn to trust others and welcome other people into their lives. Learning to cope with separation, anxiety and fear is the only way that will happen and it wont be smooth or effortless. Acknowledging a child’s feelings and supporting them by even allowing familiar items from home to be kept on hand can help them gain control over their feelings over time and become more social and less closed off. How children are guided and disciplined also go hand in hand. Children need security and caregivers need to help children gain a sense of control over their actions, and emotions. Discipline isn’t a big issue because children’s are limited based on what they can and can’t do, yet. Therefore a Childs social skills can also be effected by how well they can deal with challenges and things that frustrate them as well as understanding boundaries and limits to interactions and behavior.
