University of Florida When They See Us Film Review

Select one film or television show from the options below. Write a review of your chosen film/television show in which you make an argument about how it enhances, deepens, complicates, or challenges an aspect of African American history we’ve studied this quarter. For example, what does When They See Us tell us about mass incarceration beyond what we discussed in class? How does Judas and the Black Messiah elaborate upon the role of the FBI in crushing the Black Panther Party? What does The Life and Death of Marsha P. Johnson show us about the role of black queer activism in the post-60s period? While you should offer a brief overview of the plot, the majority of the paper should be analysis rather than summary. Remember, you need a thesis/argument!

This assignment should be 750-900 words or about three pages. While you should cite lectures and readings as normal, you do not need to include footnotes or a citation for your chosen film.

Below is a list of films and television shows you may review, with streaming service they are available on in parentheses. For those of you without access to a streaming video service,

  • Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker (television/Netflix)
  • Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (film/Netflix)
  • Judas and the Black Messiah (film/HBOMax)
  • Malcolm X (film/Hulu)
  • Ali (film)
  • Red Tails (film)
  • Straight Outta Compton (film)
  • Marshall (film)
  • Just Mercy (film)
  • Fruitvale Station (film/Netflix)
  • When They See Us (television/Netflix)
  • The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson (documentary/Netflix)
  • I Am Not Your Negro (documentary/Netflix)
  • Exterminate All the Brutes, Part 4 (documentary/HBOMax)
  • The Central Park Five (documentary/HBOMax)

I consider The 13th and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to have significant enough flaws that they are inappropriate for this assignment.
