Transformation of Indentured Servitude in Colonies Analysis Essay

“The beginning of European settlement of the Americas from 1492 was marked by an extensive demand for labor. As the assigned class readings show, the earliest forms of labor involved both coerced labor and forms of indentured servitude that utilized the work of Europeans, Native Americans and African peoples. By the late 1600s, this fluid labor arrangement became more restrictive and formalized, with a form of racially (African) based slavery imposed in North America. What factors contributed to this development? How and why did this transformation occur?”

Write a 1300 word paper that addresses the question posed above. In your response, be sure to base your claims on materials read in the assigned readings (you should only use sources from the course.)

Bring an outline of your paper to class on Tuesday September 21st.

1st Draft of the paper are due Tuesday October 5th by the start of class (hand them in via the Canvas Drop Site, under Assignments). You will be then assigned a peer reviewer as well as assigned to peer review a classmate’s paper on canvas. Your comments on their paper are due Friday October 8th by 11:59PM.

2nd Draft of the paper, taking your peer reviewer’s comments into account, is due Tuesday October 12th by the start of class (hand them in via the Canvas Drop Site, under Assignments). We will give you feedback on that paper, and discuss this draft during the Writing Conferences on October 26th.

The final draft is due via the Canvas Drop Site, under Assignments, Tuesday November 2nd by classtime. Lateness will result in a lower grade.

All papers should follow standard grammar, punctuation and citation methods.

Final drafts are to be submitted electronically to your designated reader by class time the day they are due.

The formatting is the usual – double-spaced, standard margins, normal sized font (12 point) and so on.

Do not use or consult outside sources for this assignment. You should only be referencing class materials – the textbook, the set of documents on Canvas, and whatever we may cover in class. You do not need to use all the documents, but you should use some of them, along with the textbook and lecture material. The best papers tend to blend together a variety of different types of sources, making for a stronger case. You will have all the information you need to write an outstanding essay.

You can just use parenthetical citations (Author, page number) after something you wish to cite. All essays should have citations. Those with none or very few will likely earn a failing grade. Since you will all be using the same sources, there is no need for a works cited page.

Please submit the rough drafts as either a .doc or .docx file. No pdfs at this juncture, since I’ll need to edit them.

Oh, and a quick note on language – I know we come across terms like “Negro” and “colored” in our readings, but they are not terms we should use as our own. It is OK to quote someone who is saying them, but these words are outdated and offensive, and have been for over fifty years, so please do not describe people as such in your own words.
