Student 1) According to Alder Criminiolgy journal about collecting data is “thorough survey research, experiments, observation, and case studies. One of the most widely used methods is survey research, which is a cost-effective method of measuring characteristics of groups.” The strength of these types of reports is that you can get information that you would never anticipate. From any of the methods, one can better their practices to make sure they can see crime patterns. However, Dr. Baboo states in her research to identify the change in crime patterns is this: “The data available is inconsistent and are incomplete thus making the task of formal analysis a far more difficult.” Also, she mentions, ” Problem of identifying techniques that can accurately and efficiently analyze this growing volume of crime data” I believe this is a huge weakness in these methods because we can’t control how people are going to fill out this information. The information can be correct or it can be altered to be misleading. That is why it can be hard to identify these patterns and make the proper changes to better the future.

Student 2) Uniform Crime Report and National Incident-Based Reporting System are two methods of collecting crime data/ The strength is there is more than one crime being tracked, and the data is been recorded. “NIBRS significantly expands officers’ ability to record data about a specific incident, which gives leaders a much fuller understanding of crime. As a result, a mayor’s policy advisor or a police executive can look at NIBRS data alone or combine them with other citywide data, analyze them, and gain a more descriptive view of criminal activity in the community. NIBRS data help law enforcement gather better evidence to develop effective solutions and practices.”:

The weakness of the Uniform Crime Report is it only track and record eight crimes. Nearly 17,000 law enforcement agencies report UCR data to the FBI but those data have several limitations that make them unsuitable for analyzing local crime. The weakness of the National Incident-Based Reporting System is it is a duplicate of the Uniform Crime Report.
