Over the course of this class thus far (1877-1929), you learned how to evaluate the role of individuals and groups of individuals in the development of an historic event, time period, turning point, or trend in American history (think primary source analysis papers). More specifically, we looked at the changing place/role of 1) the Middle Class, 2) immigrants, and 3) Native Americans.

In the essay box below, write an essay in which you…

  1. choose ONE (1) of the above mentioned groups
  2. elaborate by providing at least THREE (3) examples evaluating why and how this group (or individuals within this group) influenced [or was influenced by] an historic event, time period, turning point, or trend in American history between 1877 and 1929. More thorough essays will introduce the historic event(s) or time period(s) they utilize before elaborating on the three examples.

Sample (that is not directly applicable to the choices above):

Group: Politicians (Time Period: Progressive Era)*

Paragraph 1: Introduction of the Progressive Era and role of politicians (generally speaking)

Paragraph 2: Example 1: Theodore Roosevelt as Trust Buster (elaborate how he was a trust buster)

Paragraph 3: Example 2: local and state laws implemented to promote change (provide examples of laws implemented)

Paragraph 4: Example 3: formation of the Populist Party (elaborate on goals of Populist Party)

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

* I chose to stick with one time period (the Progressive Era). However, I could have chosen to utilize others as well (example: DeJure laws during the Jim Crow Era; example: Compromise of 1877 and the end of Reconstruction)
