Chapter 3
Leadership is an action, not a title….the topic for this chapter states very strongly that it’s not what job you have, but what you do in that position is what matters. Have you ever worked with someone whose title meant more than their actual performance? How long did it take colleagues and employees to see through this person?
I like his “driving from the back of the bus” analogy. Your thoughts?
“Thinking one level up” is a good perspective. I would add that “thinking one level down” can also be helpful to see an issue/decision from many mindsets. Give an example where both thinking up and down would be valuable before implementing change.
Choose one question from the end of the chapter and explain your answer.
Chapter 4
Comment on the S-T-P method. It’s simple and clear. Where do you think it could be used effectively?
The 7 steps listed on page 24 will be useful to you when writing your “Personal Strategic Plan and Leadership Skills Assessment”, due 10/12/19. Read these over with that assignment in mind. I think #3 is a great step–encourages all of us to get over our egos.
Answer questions #1 and #2 on page 24, and #7 on page 25–read “the fine print” on page 24 before answering #7.
I like McGinn’s time management concepts in the “Last Word” section–namely that the best time management tools are completely ineffective if you are headed in the wrong direction. A reminder that setting a course and a strategy is fundamental to the success/usefulness of other management tools.
