  1. Think of your experiences with adults, youth or children with disabilities. How have you observed, positively or negatively, any of the five values of community living – presence, participation, competence, choice, respect (see True Members of a Community file). How have you or how could you, specifically encourage these values to occur so that individuals with disabilities can achieve the knowledge and experiences through community living to lead them into productive employment?   2. After reading chapter 8 and the case studies in the appendix of chapter 8 review the case study about Sam on page 115. Identify three of the four types of barriers (voluntary obstacle, involuntary barrier, psychological barrier, situational barrier) that are hindering Sam from employment opportunities. Also, identify a solution or accommodation to overcome each barrier.
  3. You are currently assisting a young adult who is interested in working in the health care industry. Never Get Sick Health Plan (NGSHP) has recently opened a new large health center in your community and has been running want ads in the newspaper for a variety of positions including clerical, laboratory, housekeeping and medical/clinical. The young adult has limited job experience and you are fearful that if she submits a job application through the human resources department, she will be screened out. discuss strategies (minimum 4) that you would use to gather information and develop a relationship with NGSHP.
