Health Outcomes on Epileptic People and Rural Populations Discussion

In this discussion I am focusing on the disparity of health outcomes of people with epilepsy in rural areas. In A systematic literature review of health disparities among rural people with epilepsy (RPWE) in the United States and Canada (Duke, et al, 2021), the focus was on research conducted in people with epilepsy living in rural areas. Of 2093 research studies, only six met the requirements of mortality, use of health resources, and epilepsy prevalence. Of these six articles, only one determined rural people with epilepsy had a greater incidence of poor outcomes in relation to PWE living in urban areas, the other five did not. The greatest challenge in researching disparity of outcomes for people with epilepsy in rural areas is a clear definition of rural (Duke, et al, 2021). All these studies applied different criteria to define rural populations, making it difficult to distinguish if this impacted disparity on this population or not. The result was the evidence was not clear to include or dispute this theory. As a parent of a daughter with epilepsy, we travel for her specialized care, and we do not live in a rural area. I do not believe there is any one key factor creating disparities in epilepsy. There are far too many factors influencing health due to this disease.

My behavior modification plan is targeted at the population of teenage mothers who reside at the covenant house. The clients that I will be creating this plan for are attempting to avoid accountability and seek to get attention. I have not made a final decision on an exact targeted behavior yet because I have so many choices and as I research more information I start to find that topic interesting. I want to focus on accountability but how exactly am I going to narrow it down, when I want to teach so much. As an adult, these life skills that I will be focusing on are so important to the development of a successful life. Example: we are all accountable for paying our mortgage or rent and if we don’t, life will happen. Life will teach us about eviction. I’m still working on it. Ha! I will be creating a plan that turns life lessons into self-confidence and positive self-esteem if accomplished. The goal is to create self motivation, determination, and drive.

Think about your Behavior Modification Research Plan in the Human Services field. Which target behavior did you focus on modifying and in what population (who are the clients)?

The client’s that I will be working with are women who are survivors of domestic abuse. The target behavior I am trying to focus on modifying is negative self talk.

In your targeted population, are the clients attempting to obtain something or avoid something? What do you think the function of their behavior is?

The client’s will be attempting to avoid any negative self-talk in hope’s to help build back up there self-esteem. Once self-esteem is built their life is able to get back on track.  The function of the behavior is trying to build back confidence in one’s self that way they are able to create goal’s and help get their life on track after leaving a toxic relationship.
