Why Is It So Hard to Talk About Money Essay

Directions

You will have an hour and fifteen minutes for the diagnostic. Please choose only one of the passages below, either Topic A or Topic B, on which to write your essay.

We suggest you read both questions quickly before deciding which one on which to focus your response. Then go back and spend a good amount of time rereading the question you’ve chosen carefully, you may want to read it several times, before writing your essay. In your writing, please identify what you believe to be the author’s position and respond to that position in some way. In your response, consider evidence from the passage, from your personal experience and observation, or from your reading.

Please double space, and use 12 point, Times New Roman font, and black text.

All essays must have your name and ID number appear clearly on your document.

We suggest you use the following time frames as a guide in managing your time to write your one

15 minutes: Understanding the question and brainstorming

30 minutes: Writing your ideas in a coherent manner

15 minutes: Proofreading: revising and editing

If you’ll notice, the time frame only adds up to an hour which allows for wiggle room should you need more time in one area or another.

Topic A

Money is like oxygen. It surrounds us, flowing in and out of our lives—and when you’re short of it, nothing else matters. Money is how we put food on the table, how we take care of people we love, and how we invest in all the things that express who we are. But money is also about so much more than what we buy. Money influences how we feel we stack up compared to others. It warps how we see our present and future, with either hope or dread. When it comes down to it, money often determines our very worth—in the deepest sense of the word.

If you’ve ever had a friend inherit a sudden financial windfall or a family member run into dire financial straits, you’ve felt that slight chill of tension where there was once ease. But, I argue, the most honest and helpful conversations about money linger in those spaces of difference. They’re how we see where we can help one another, and also help us understand how money is working in our lives with greater context.

[However] we do a lot of sleight of hand to obscure how we’re doing financially; this is true from our most intimate relationships to our national politics. We live in an era when tech billionaires wear jeans and sneakers, struggling people carry designer purses, and doctors and lawyers are drowning in student loan debt.

We avoid and evade because, even in a time of surging income inequality, no one wants to be an outlier in America. Most of us want to present ourselves as part of the honorable, hardworking middle class.

Topic B

It seems like hardly a week goes by where there isn’t some report about a book that has been challenged or banned from use in a school. The reasons vary. Unpopular religious views or opinions, gratuitous violence, sexually explicit, language are some of the more frequent reasons listed…. I think it is worth discussing what the deeper reason is for people challenging books. In my opinion, it’s because the books make the challenger uncomfortable, and to that I say good!

For me, books that make me uncomfortable are eye-opening experiences. Reading about rape or the brutalities of war or suicide should never be comfortable. They are difficult subjects that fictional stories can help readers to decode. For some, reading about people with different sexual orientations or religions may also be uncomfortable, but again- through those stories, we gain an understanding of other people, and that understanding can make us more compassionate and accepting of differences.
