Utah State University Applying Nursing Theory into Practice Peers Response

I currently work at Hoag Hospital in southern California and we use the professional practice model (PPM) as standard practice of care or as our facility designated theoretical model.  Hoag hospital is also a magnet hospital that tries their best to make a positive impact on patients’ lives. Hoag Hospital  and Sinai Health are some of the few hospitals that practice PPM.  Jeffs et al., (2020) states “practice is a key lever to enable healthcare professionals to practice, collaborate, communicate and develop professionally to provide the highest quality care for those served by the organization” (p.18).  I remember my first week’s orientation was all about understanding what kind of work environment Hoag wants to represent. Honestly, I’ve worked in multiple places and although there are few quirks here, Hoag is a great place to work.  The key factors affiliated with Hoag’s PPM are the importance of advocacy, compassion, excellence, Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert Model, and understanding patient care takes a multidisciplinary approach.  Benner’s Model proposes “that there are five levels of proficiency that nurses are Novice, Advanced Beginner (AB), Competent,Proficient, and Expert. “ (Kubsch & Tyczkowski, 2020, p. 12).  At this point in my career, I am in the range of competent and proficient in the emergency room. I am also a Clinical ladder nurse that has implemented a flow sheet for stroke pathway and documentation. I have created a better workflow and audit tool on conscious sedation monitoring during procedures. All in all, I have collaborated and communicated great ideas to my unit using the PPM and it is encouraged to use these methods of professionality in my hospital.
