University of Sunderland Importance of Maintaining Data Privacy Response

Response 2: Abdul Khaliq Mohammed

Data mining is a complex process by which data brokers collect, store, and study large amounts of data for samples (Law Offices of Salar Atrizadeh, 2014). Data mining is the collection of data from various areas such as consumers’ shopping habits, healthcare, online and public records, which consumers are interested in and use for various commercial purposes (Sharda et al., 2019). Some companies have their own business and U.S. The government uses the data for surveillance projects that ensure public safety.

The main privacy issue of data mining is the data breach around us. Data is stored in one place after data mining is completed, there is a high risk for users privacy (Sharda et al., 2019). Occurring data breaches weaken data protection and allow hackers to misuse users’ personal data. Data mining should be done to store data in a more secure location to prevent anonymous attacks and breaches. For example, if we consider the Facebook and Cambridge Analytics data breach, Facebook shares the personal information of its customers with a tech company for commercial purposes. Subsequently, the company was shut down in 2018 due to scandals and Cambridge Analytics once confirmed that the information had been deleted. I think the evidence explains the privacy issues with data mining. Not only this scandal, but we can also take the example of Tic-Tac banned in most countries because it collects personal information on consumers’ smartphones.

The National Security Agency has a protocol for the destruction of irrelevant information to prevent violations (Law Offices of Salar Atrizadeh, 2014). However, these protocols are rarely followed to ensure security. Therefore, the US Congress has taken a step forward in protecting the confidentiality of data mining. Since then, we have received many phone calls and emails about a bill passed by the Health Care Act on the health insurance portability and accountability law of this company to protect the confidentiality of medical records. In line with the recommendations of the Federal Trade Commission, Congress has been instructed to conduct data mining in such a way that consumers have control over their personal information and how it can be used for their own security.
