         Healthy behaviors are the most effective method to avoid sickness, live longer, and be happier. However, amid the turmoil of a woman’s everyday life, chores, employment, hectic schedules, and other factors may take precedence over healthy living. The WHNP’s job is to examine, diagnose, and treat women’s health care needs throughout their lives. Many WHNPs operate in private practice, providing preventative care such as well-woman examinations, breast cancer screenings, Papanicolaou (Pap) testing, and contraception. WHNPs can also help with adolescent health, pregnancy tests, fertility evaluations, prenatal visits, and affluent families (Ernst, 2020). This first week of clinicals in women health was great, I was out of my comfort zone being that I am a medical surgical/ telemetry nurse. It was a great experience for me.

           This week patient was a 24-year-old, Hispanic female weight 160 pounds, Temp 97 F, RR 18, Heart rate 88. Patient came in for her yearly check up to complete her pap smear. As the preceptor was assessing the patient and ask if she had any concerns the patient stated “last week I felt a lump in my right breast”.  Patient was then questioned if she had any family history of breast cancer in which she sated no. Patient was asked if she had any pain or swelling, also if she had had any nipple discharge during the past week in which she stated no. The preceptor had palpated the lump which was movable and non-tender. Breast lumps, breast discomfort or tenderness, nipple discharge or inversion, and changes in the breast skin are all prevalent in women of all ages, from teenagers to the elderly. While discovering a new breast condition might be worrisome, most breast disorders are not caused by breast cancer. To establish if a lump is fluid-filled or solid, an ultrasound of the breast may be advised. Another alternative is needle aspiration (the removal of fluid using a needle and a syringe). Fluid-filled cysts aren’t generally caused by cancer, and they only need to be treated if they’re bothersome. A needle is generally used to drain the fluid from a fluid-filled cyst if it is necessary. (Staradub, 2020).

           Patient was given a prescription for ultrasound and was told they will call her once the results are in. This was a challenging situation for me to see the patient come in for a check up and then to become so worried once she mentions she had a lump in her breast. I felt for the patient and tried to comfort her as much as possible as we educated her on the importance on routine self-breast examinations. This week clinical taught me working in women’s health can be very emotional whether its excitement or sadness, but its ok to share those emotions with your patients. I had a great experience in this week clinical, and I am looking forward to learning more as a nurse practitioner.
