Students are often surprised that “psychology” is related to business and employment. This is a growing field in educational departments. It is usually related to programs focusing on “Human Resources” programs, training I/O Psychologists to work in large companies and organizations who employ individuals to manage employee satisfaction, provide programs to increase stability in the workplace, maintain the company’s employee safety training programs, resolve employee-employer conflicts or inter-office conflict resolution, and respond to employee reports of bias or discrimination.

EAP (Employee Assistance Program) counseling is also provided by many companies and organizations. This can be provided via the company itself or contracted out to licensed professionals. In most cases the counseling (self-referred) is totally confidential, just as in normal counseling situations. However, it is important to know that employees who are required (employer referred) to attend EAP counseling due to work place problems may not have full confidentiality as EAP counselors must provide reports to employers in certain situations. These situations can include employer referrals for programs such as drug and alcohol treatment, anger management, stress management, or inter-office conflict resolution skills. Do note that the therapist must notify the counseled (employee) of these limitations and any required reports before therapy/counseling commences. If you are ever referred for EAP counseling, make sure you ask about your confidentiality rights or limits!
