To find a good topic, look for something in the reading that needs explaining, something surprising or contradictory, or something that suggests a change of mind. Look for a problem that the author is faced with and see how he or she resolves it. In general, a paper works best if you can pose a clear problem at the beginning and then work toward a solution. (Conversely, a paper tends to feel flat if you begin by making a general observation about the author or work and then simply give examples of that observation.)
