New York University Just Walk on By by Brent Staples Article Discussion

Instruction: Reply on the following post (at most 100 words)

The three assigned readings that caught my attention are “Just Walk on By” by Brent Staples, “How it Feels to be Colored Me” by Zora Neale Hurston, and “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr. I chose to read the three articles because they explore critical issues that our contemporary society is struggling with. “Just Walk on By” and “How it Feels to be Colored Me” explores the issues of racism, which is still affecting modern people. It worries me to note that to-date, we have failed to fight racism. We have accepted that systematic racism is deep-rooted in our culture, and some of us are resigned to pursuing efforts to address racism. “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” was the most engaging and relatable. The article caught my attention mostly because it gave me a wake-up call regarding my over-reliance on the web for learning.

Carr argues that using the internet as a primary source of information is counterproductive to our learning process in that it flattens our brain’s learning experience. According to Carr, the internet provides easy and fast access to information, which affects our ability to read books. While the internet provides shallow information, books are detailed and more educative.
