You are a rehabilitation social worker at a major rehabilitation hospital in the Midwest. You have been presented with the following case:

Anthony Mares is a forty-three-year old male recently blinded as a result of a progressive degenerative eye condition. Married, with three children (ages 15, 13 and 6), Anthony worked for twenty years, until recently, as an auto-mechanic. His wife, Patty, forty-one, has worked as a homemaker. She has also worked part-time as a billing clerk. The Mares are buying a home in a small community that is 25 miles from the city in which your hospital is located. Anthony is depressed over his recent loss of sight. He exhibits a depressed affect and displays anger toward hospital staff, and his wife states he is “rejecting” her. You have been referred to the case because he is causing trouble for staff and because he needs help with discharge from the hospital back home, which is due to occur in three days.

How would you assess Anthony and his family using the strengths perspective? Compare how you would view working with Anthony from a traditional and social model of intervention. What are the functions and roles you might use in working with Anthony? Discuss strategies you might use to help Anthony in empowerment.
