Hillsborough Community College Abortion for Minors Discussion

Now that you’ve studied a number of arguments regarding the morality of abortion, it’s time to develop an argument of your own. Because this is a large, thorny topic, I’d like each of you to focus in on a specific circumstance of abortion, rather than tackling the topic as a whole. As each of you will be focusing on different particulars, we’ll have the chance to explore a wide variety of circumstances under which abortion might (or might not) be appropriate.

To make sure you understand what I’m looking for, here’s a list of the types of circumstances I have in mind for you to focus on, but these are only suggestions – you don’t have to select something from this list.

– abortion in the case of fetal abnormality

– abortion in the case of rape

– abortion when the mother is a minor

– abortion when the mother wants an abortion but the father objects

– abortion when the father wants an abortion but the mother objects

– abortion when the parents are financially unable to care for the child

– abortion in the first trimester

– abortion in the third trimester

Step 1: – Offer the strongest argument you can in support of your position regarding abortion in a particular circumstance (one of the suggestions given above, or one of your own). Remember, it’s not enough to simply state your view. Just as the authors we read this week did, you should provide premises that support your conclusion.
