Chapter 1. Before History

This chapter looks at what life was like before recorded history, and the emergence of people and where they settled. It discusses how people started to develop cities and societies. In reading this chapter, pay special attention to these terms and pay attention at how the societies began form and what they were like.

Australopithecus-before Humans…part of the family Homindae, lived 1-4 million years ago. Smarter than apes but not as smart as humans or Homo erectus: 2 million to 200,000 years ago. Home erectus used tools.

Homo sapiens: us! Humans. Migrated out of Africa all around the world.

Paleolithic era: Stone age people

. You should know the basics of their society, including Cave Paintings and Venus figurines.

Neandertal: A specific type of Home sapien during the Paleolithic era.

Neolithic Era: After the Stone age. Home sapiens got better at agriculture. Know the basics of Neoliithic society, using the city of Catal Huyuk as an example. It is suspected that in these cities patriarchy was the rule. This means men had a dominate position to women in the society.

This Chapter looks at some of the first recorded civilizations and how they changed and grew over time.

Mesopotamia: land between the rivers valley between Tigris and Euphrates rivers, now modern day Iraq. Some of the first known civilizations are from here. The earliest society here was the Sumerians. The nomadic herders that moved about this land and spoke a variety of languages were called Semitic people.

-Remember, with Dates, BCE goes down like 2000, the next year would be 1999, 1998 until 0 when they go up again!

-Sumerian City-States: 3200-2350 BC. Basically small Kingdoms, ruled by authorities such as the famous Gilgamesh of Uruk. Ziggurats were temples or pyramids in Mesopotamia.

-Gradually the city states were united as empires under strong kings like Sargon of Akkad and later Hammurabi (about 1750 BCE) of the Babylonian Empire. Hammurabi created one of the first distinct law codes.

-Assyrians: Those who rule Mesopotamia about 1000-600 BCE

-You should know the basics about these Mesopotamian societies and be familiar with Bronze Metallurgy, Iron Metallurgy, the Wheel, Ships and trade.

-Also be familiar with their culture, such as Social Class, Slavery, Patriarchal Society, and the role of Women. And writing (cunifrom) and education.

Hebrews: Semetic Nomads that spoke Hebrew. The Israelites were Hebrews that settled in

Palestine around 1300, while following Moses according to scripture. They believed in one god (Monotheism) called Yahweh. The Jews are the people who trace their origins to the Hebrews. You should know about Hebrew culture and struggles with the Assyrians and Babylonians.

Phoenicians: Another group of people known for trading and their alphabet.

Indo-European: People who went from southern Russia, to India and then to Europe. Spread

Very similar languages. Like English! They used horses, one of these groups was the Hittites. You should know the basics about this group.
