Analysis: Where your ideas meet the text’s ideas:

(remember your Analysis notes from Module 9/21-9/23)

This will be an analysis of your chosen article, also one paragraph long. Make sure to avoid summary in your analysis (except for your one sentence summary of the main ideas), as you can assume that your reader is familiar with the article. Rather, you will offer your evaluation, your insights, and your understanding of the ideas the author presents to go beyond the obvious or literal meaning in the book. Also, focus on the ideas of the text, rather than on your own personal opinions and life experiences. (remember to use terminology in bold)

Questions to consider for analysis include (but are not limited to):

• What is the historical CONTEXT of the article that might have affected the ideas in it? Does it relate to a topical issue? (current issue?)
• What is the PURPOSE of the article as it relates to the target audience? Who is the TARGET AUDIENCE? Usually some of the first information presented.
• What is the tone or attitude the author(s) has toward the topic, reader, etc., and how would you describe the style the author uses to express the ideas? How credible is the author(s)? (Consider expertise, education, personal experience)
• What kinds of techniques (STRATEGIES) and (APPEALS) does the writer use to convince the target audience of the validity of the argument/position/claims? (This is in reference to the each claim that you identify that is used to persuade the target audience and support of the author’s position.) (Claims + Strategy (evidence)+ Appeals + Impact on the Target Audience).
• Was the Evidence used by the author Accurate, **Credible, and Relevant (important to the topic)?**Credible (credibility) means an argument is logically sound and well-supported with strong evidence and reasoning.
• How EFFECTIVE is the argument? This evaluation typically concludes you analysis. **Effective (effectiveness) means an argument works in convincing or persuading its audience. Many arguments that are effective are also credible…but there are also many that aren’t.

How to Write an Article Critique (one paragraph)

An article critique is an analysis of an article that evaluates the success of a work. Critiques give additional insight into an articles strengths and weaknesses, as well as provide an analysis of its main points.

Writing the Critique

1.) Compose Introductory sentence: include author’s name, name of the “Article Title”, its source and the thesis or main theme of the article.

2.) Provide the Context What was happening when it was written), and the describe the Target Audience.

3.) In one sentence, summarize the article’s Argument, Supporting points/Claims, and the author’s Purpose.

4.) Analyze each supporting claim (3 ish) and support (Claims + Strategy (evidence) + Appeals + Impact on the Target Audience).

5.) Was the Evidence used by the author Accurate, **Credible, and Relevant (important to the topic)?

**Credible (credibility) means an argument is logically sound and well-supported with strong evidence and reasoning.
