Researchers have identified factors that characterize people who manage to adapt to difficult conditions. These factors are interrelated. Support systems help people solve problems, increasing their sense of control, security, and confidence:

1. Successful persons tend to have strong social support systems: The availability of supportive serves as a buffer against the effects of stressful situations.

2. Successful copers tend to have a sense of control over the environment: it is “self-efficacy” or “internal locus of control.” People who cope effectively do so because they believe their actions can have an effect. The sense of control in a situation can be affected by the appraisal of the stressor and the presence or absence of adequate personal and environmental resources.

3. Successful copers have the information and tools needed for effective problem solving: Individuals’ coping success depends, on their ability to solve immediate problems and develop appropriate new behaviors.

4. Successful copers tend to be confident that they can adapt to new situations: The feelings of confidence come from the availability of personal and financial resources and from having coped successfully with similar transitions in the past.

I chose the follow two models of outreach programs because I consider that children are the future, they are the seed of future generations. These outreach programs involve providing professional services to this specific group.

  • Helping Children Cope with Family Disruption.

I think children and young people are a vulnerable population. Knowing that a series of cognitive, affective, behavioral and psychological problems have been identified that are very common in children whose parents have divorced, it should be taken into account that children in these conditions have special needs, so in this outreach program preventive projects have been developed coping skills, implementing services that reflect accurate understanding and demonstrate a genuine respect for the cultural integrity and needs of these children.

  • Outreach to Children Who Witness Domestic Violence.

It is known that the psychological effects in children who witness domestic violence notably affect their emotions and behavior, so these children are at risk of suffering a series of psychological problems, manifestation of aggressive behaviors in problem solving, abusive language, a high degree of anxiety, the tendency to somatize their feelings and express a sense of responsibility for the conflict their parents experience.

This outreach program emphasizes the need for counselors to utilize preventive, educational, and support services promoting the psychological development and well-being of children who have been exposed to domestic violence.

  • Describe the four factors that characterize people who can successfully adapt to difficult conditions

The first factor that researchers had found that characterizes people who successfully adapt to challenging conditions is that successful persons tend to have strong social support systems. When people have partners, family, or friends that provide a supportive relationship, this helps individuals to cope better with the impact of stress, trauma, conflicts, or any problematic situation. A strong support system provides good emotional support allowing clients to receive validation and help. The second factor is that successful copers tend to have a sense of control over the environment. This factor highlights how people who develop coping mechanisms tend to comprehend their actions’ effects on the world. For this, they grow the capacity to exercise control when needed. The third factor is that successful copers have the information and tools needed for effective problem solving. In order to effectively adapt to any possible contingencies, individuals who are successfully copers are able to solve problems, adapt and develop new behaviors due to their knowledge about the specific situation and life skills. The last factor is successful copers tend to be confident that they can adapt to new situations. This factor emphasizes how previous events from the past that the individual has successfully resolved, and have any similarity with a present problem, help build confidence because this is an issue that the individual has faced before and overcome effectively.

One model of outreach programs that community counselors can create to serve clients undergoing transitions is Helping Adults Cope with Marital Disruption. Divorce and its disturbing influence on a person’s life are an ancient and persistent problem in counseling. People going through divorce or separation are under much stress become their whole dynamic changes. Some of the factors that may be affected are children, finance, emotional support. Because of the disruption that divorce can cause in a person’s mental status and the need to develop new coping skills is considered a high-risk situation. There is a need for counselors to intervene by developing programs to help individuals experiencing this issue. Counselors can help clients who are transitioning from divorce by strengthening a new network of social support. Another model of the outreach program is Outreach to Children Who Witness Domestic Violence. Children who witness domestic violence are considered a vulnerable population, and early intervention is needed due to the psychological effects of this issue. These children are at high risk of developing psychological problems, including aggressive behaviors, abusive language, anxiety, and even a sense of guilt.
