What Has Society Learned From The Pandemic Essay

Reflection Essay Prompt:  What has Society Learned from the Pandemic?

Assignment:  After a year and a half of being on lock down, and living with a global pandemic, what has society learned?  Another way to approach this, if you’d prefer, is, “The pandemic taught me ______ and ______.”  Some examples of what I’ve personally learned from the pandemic:

  • I learned that Americans are terrified of running out of toilet paper
  • I learned that when one Starbucks shuts down all the nearby locations suddenly have 30-minute wait times at the drive through
  • I learned that some Americans are capable of politicizing one of the least political things in the world: our physical health
  • I saw firsthand how bad the systemic racism in healthcare is
  • I learned that many Americans are still capable of putting aside meaningless differences and taking care of each other
  • I learned how fragile life is
  • I learned that a lot of us are walking around living our everyday lives with undiagnosed health conditions
  • I learned what it’s like to lose six of my people to a disease in less than four months
  • I learned how obsessed so many of us are with protecting our chins from infectious disease

And the list could be longer, but you get the idea, and I’m already tired of writing.  You’ll notice that some of those were intended to be humorous, and others were deadly serious.  The tone of this essay is entirely up to you.

Procedure:  This essay is more reflective than argumentative, so you aren’t required to provide academic evidence to support your claims.  All you’ll need to support your points is your own personal observations.  With that said, please keep the following in mind when working on this assignment:

  1. Instead of the five-paragraph essay format detailed in the Basic Essay Structure page, please only write four (4) paragraphs. You will only be required to identify two (2) things that society / you have learned from the pandemic.
  2. Intro Paragraph: Introduce the topic (the pandemic), give 2-3 sentences of background information, and end with a thesis statement that follows one of these templates:
    1. “After a year and a half of living with a global pandemic, our society has learned ______, and ______.”
    2. “Living with the pandemic for a year and a half has taught me ______, and ______.”
  3. Body Paragraphs: Each body paragraph will contain a topic sentence, context, evidence (your own personal observation), and analysis (2-3 sentences of analysis please).  The first body paragraph should have a transition at the end of it, but the second should not.
  4. Conclusion Paragraph: 3-5 sentences offering a brief summary of your main points, and your final thoughts on the subject.

Requirements:

  1. 500-750 words.  No Works Cited page is needed since there’s no evidence other than your own personal observation.
  2. Your essay MUST be no less than four (4) paragraphs.
  3. Your essay MUST follow the instructions in the Procedure section above.
  4. Essay MUST be written in 12pt Times New Roman font.  Essay MUST be double spaced, and essay MUST have 1″ margins.
  5. When submitting this essay online, it MUST be submitted in either DOCX or PDF format.
