Part 1: WRITE 100 WORDS ON THIS WEEK’S READING AND/OR MEDIA EVENT
Write 100 words to tell our class your thoughts on this week’s reading and/or media events etc.
Discussion Prompt:
Discuss and consider how social problems can be addressed the social science method Design Thinking, social entrepreneurial thinking/approaches, and innovations provided by technologies.
Reference at least one reading, media event, or digital educational material for the week.
Part 2: Write at least 50 words per response to each fellow student for 100 words total.
1. One article that I found very interesting this week was Design Thinking for Social Innovation by Tim Brown and Jocelyn Wyatt. Reading this article helped me realize the importance of adhering to costumers wants and needs when creating a product or service. In Shanti’s case, she desired a better water service system so that she could buy and transport a desired amount of water to her home daily.
Shanti’s need for a better service is where the benefits of design thinking come in. Design thinking is an important concept, because it allows for businesses to become more creative, distinguish their brand and be the first to bring their products and services to the market.
I thought it was very informative to learn about design thinking. I was able to gain a better understanding towards the importance of consumers wants and needs, and how they are one of the most important aspects to a business.
2. In Design Thinking Explained by MIT Sloan, I learned how the design thinking process can help people innovate and create new products and technologies. While I found the process interesting and useful, what truly inspired me was A Bath Without Water, a TED talk by Ludwick Marishane. Seeing how Marishane created DryBath, the world’s first bath-substituting lotion, I realized that so many of our world’s social problems (like inaccessible clean water) can be addressed using design thinking. I never could have imagined a way to bathe without water, but Marishane taught me that even the most impossible-sounding problems can be addressed using the design thinking process. While it may take a while to fully implement the process, the end result will pay off, as we saw in the video.
Part 3: Analytic Response to Readings, Media, and Social Entrepreneurship Exemplars for the Week.
500 words minimum including quotes you incorporate from the text.
Required: at least three (3) verbatim quotes from the reading with page numbers (no page numbers required for websites) or paraphrases of the speakers/media events with general time stamp for videos or date for “live events.”
Prompt: Summarize design thinking as described by MIT Sloan. What are the steps? How does design thinking put people, clients, and communities at the center of the process? How does design thinking inspire innovation? What did you find inspiring about the Social Entrepreneurs of the Week—what did they teach you about how solutions to social problems can be generated using an inductive, culturally appropriate, client-centered approach using design thinking?
