Valencia College Kant Deontology Discussion Questions

I’m working on a writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Please read Kant’s Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals and answer the following questions:

  1. Why does Kant oppose locating an action’s moral worth in its consequences?
  2. What does Kant mean by claiming that the will is the only good thing without qualification?
  3. What does Kant mean by “acting out of duty”? How does the shop-keeper example inform this?
  4. What is the difference between a hypothetical and a categorical imperative? Provide an example for each.
  5. In your own words, state Kant’s first formulation of the categorical imperative. Why is it wrong to make false promises according to this formulation? Make sure that you do not appeal to the bad consequences as the basis for judging it wrong.
  6. In your own word, state Kant’s second formulation. Based on the second formulation, would you find it morally permissible for me to be someone’s slave? Explain.
