Based on your group discussion of the Twenty Statements form, please write a short paper (about 2 pages) on the assignment and your understanding of the self.

For the first part of the paper, note some of the similarities and differences between the group’s responses. Don’t just note the differences in content, but in the types of attributes used by your group members. Did some of you use primarily institutional responses? Impulsive responses? Were they balanced? What might these similarities or differences mean in terms of your group members’ socialization?

For the second part of the paper, you might want to focus on one or two (but no more than three) of the following areas:

• How did Cooley’s concept of the Looking Glass Self inform the attributes or statuses you used to fill out the form?
• Did you emphasize parts of your self informed more by Mead’s concepts of the “I” or the “me”?
• Did you (and your group) primarily describe yourselves in institutional or impulsive terms? How severe was the imbalance, if there was one?
• What are the key takeaways from this activity?
• Does the individual create their own self-concept?
• Is self-concept based on the same ideas across cultures or across generations of the same culture? What might some differences be and why might they exist?
• How did your upbringing or even the larger culture inform the statuses of the group? Might those differences be partly responsible for the differences in the types of statuses the group members listed?
