Find an artwork you can view in-person. While in person, take notes of a detailed visual description of the artwork. Before you leave, take a photo of this artwork, and note the title of the piece and the artist’s name. I STRONGLY encourage you to get out to look at art. Other places within a reasonable driving distance include: The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, The Kemper Museum of Art, The Dahm, The Nerman, as well as several art galleries in and around Kansas City. Extra Credit will be rewarded to anyone who travels to Kansas City to view artwork. Other travel may be considered for extra credit upon approval.

The paper will be graded as a test, as it will evaluate your comprehension of the following topics, which can be refreshed through your textbook.

-Aesthetics

-What is art

-Identifying themes

-Identifying elements and principles

-Describing artwork

-Interpretation/ making meaning

Formatting:

This paper should be in MLA format. It will be a minimum of 3 full pages of writing, double-spaced, 12pt, Times New Roman font with 1” page margins on all sides.

Your image of your work as well as your descriptive notes from ¥our in person viewing should be attached. This does not contribute to your page count.

Introduction:

Begin your paper with a one-paragraph introduction that tells the reader what the paper is about. In this section, include the artist’s name, the title of the piece, and the name of where the piece is located. The last sentence of this paragraph should transition into your next section in your paper. For example “In this art criticism paper about Robert Rauschenburg’s Tracer, exhibited at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, a description, interpretation and summary will help the reader understand and appreciate this 20th-Century American artwork.”

Description:

This accounts for nearly two-thirds of your paper and answers the question “What’s there?” Describe the work as accurately as you can, noting the visual elements and principles of design. Describe this work so accurately that someone who is unable to physically see this artwork can form a clear picture in their brain of the artwork. Describe media/materials, orientation, direction and location of specific shades of colors and shapes. Test your description by reading it to someone and having them sketch out what they think it looks like. This section should be purely factual and observational. Once this is complete,

Interpretation:

This section will be your interpretation of “What is the artwork about?” What is its meaning or content? Base your interpretation on the descriptive clues you wrote above. Think about what connotations come with certain colors, sizes, shapes, textures, and subject matter. Think about all the meanings you were able to prescribe to random objects with your groups in class. In this section of your paper, develop and prove your interpretive statements. Explain as much as possible about the time and place and the ideas in the work as you can so the reader can understand the context of the work. Support your interpretation with research in the library and internet. Cite your sources (in MLA format).

Summary:

The summary should answer whether or not the art is good. Why or why not? This should also be your concluding paragraph of your art criticism paper. You can note your own responses to the work, and give a brief summary of your description and interpretation to support your opinion on the aesthetic value of the work.
