Assignment #1: Argumentative Outline and Presentation (Outline 30 points + Presentation 30 points) (60 points total)

Students will analyze how a particular essay tries to persuade its readers through argumentative claims and evidence. Given the topics:

  1. Camera Surveillance – should or should not be implemented in schools
  2. Important Documents (i.e., birth certificates, home address, etc.) on the web – (should or should not be available for the public.
  3. People in the Public Eye – should or should not be allowed their privacy (i.e., celebrities such as Sia, the singer) think about paparazzi, the news, and how they are always reporting about people in the public eye.

Students will choose one of the three selections to investigate and persuade their audience about their stance towards the topic. How you want to shape your arguments is up to you; be respectful to your audience at all times. Your goal is to persuade your audience to side with you. Examples of organization and student samples are found on Blackboard.

Directions:

  • Please describe the problem in terms of what it faces or creates.
  • What caused the problem?
  • What potential impact/effect(s) could the problem have on society as a whole?
  • How to solve the problem.
  • Use of evidence and logic will be essential for this paper (You should have 3 sources to help support your arguments)
  • Organization: Please organize your outline by answering in the order of this prompt.
  • Your outline should be at least 3-5 pages in length, APA Format, double spaced, size 12- point font, Times New Roman, Cover page (with Running head) refer to Bb for outline sample.
  • Be ready to present via zoom a 4-6 minute max Extemporaneous presentation. NOTE: Outline is due the day you submit to Canvas.
