In his writings entitled, Poetics, (the 1st work of literary criticism ever!) Aristotle says that tragedy (an imitation of actions of life) must elicit feelings of pity and fear, which would result in a catharsis (purging of the emotions of pity and fear).

  1. Be creative and In ONE paragraph write a synopsis (short and detailed summary) of an idea for a tragedy (play or musical).
  2. Describe: (as many as you can)
    1. How you will incite pity for an ordinary protagonist (main character) – explain why the audience could pity him in 2-3 sentences only
    2. How you will Incite fear for the protagonist – explain why the audience fears for him in 2-3 sentences only
    3. How or when does the protagonist’s luck change to misfortune? (what Aristotle calls the“reversal”) in 2-3 sentences only.
    4. His weakness or hamartia (which brings misfortune upon himself) in 1-2 sentences only.
    5. A recognition or climax – otherwise known as the moment of truth in 2-3 sentences only.

(Remember that his actions/behaviors must be probable or “plausible”/possible in real life.)

Note: According to Aristotle tragedy also rids or purges ourselves of repressed emotions that we might otherwise experience in real life (through our unconscious). This is a psychological concept called catharsis.
