In scaffolding, the teacher can model a skill, provide hints or cures to the child, and provide multiple choices of materials. This is where the teacher will provide materials that are familiar to the students based on their cultural background ow what they like or just what the student chooses.

I think also that getting to know the students on a personal level, meaning, learning about the student learning styles, about their culture, their religion their likes and dislikes, and respecting the students for who they are despite their race, abilities, or social-economic status will also help a great deal in helping them to have a framework for learning.

The skills and academic framwork that children are taught at a young age stay with them through life as long as they are repeating them and using them frequently. In a school setting, the students will be frequently be using the same skills over and over. As an educator, we can build on the information the children already know and have been taught. This allows them to take the knowledge they already have and apply it to the new information they already have. Each student learns differently and that is a given, so some approaches may work on one student and not work on another. This is when it is important as an educator to get to know the students individually academically and apply the way they learn to the information we are attempting to teach them with. I do not think that children will slowly become unteachable as they get older if they have issues as they are younger, I do think that it maybe more difficult to get the child to be interested or create a desire to want to learn if they have had no discipline or structure for academics when they were younger. Some children find a way to slip through the crack and sit quietly, not ask questions and do just enough work to skim by but in reality they are not retaining information at that point.

Discussion: Screening and Assessment Tools

What is important to know and when is it important to know it? To intervene in a problem, a social worker must first identify the problem. Screening and initial assessment can be useful to identity individuals who may be experiencing mental health concerns and could benefit from seeing a clinical social worker. This then would lead to a more comprehensive assessment from which a treatment plan is built. However, deciding who to assess, when, and using which tools can feel like a confusing process. For example, should you provide depression screenings in the community to people who are not clients? Should you screen all new clients for substance abuse regardless of presenting problem? Should you ask about suicide in every session or only when it feels like it could be a concern?

For this Discussion, review the following resources and consider the different screening and assessment tools currently available. Identify the tools you think you would be most likely to use in your practice.

Teratogen Discussion board

You’ve watched Video 5.1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdOnr4mR7bk&feature=youtu.be    and have learned more about what prenatal development is like. We are now going to focus on an important topic, teratogens (definition: an agent that induces developmental abnormalities in a fetus). While Video 5.1 discusses certain teratogens briefly, let’s see about some other substances and determine whether or not they are teratogens.

Before clicking on any of the discussion boards below, look at the substance and determine whether you think it is a teratogen or not. Then, find some resource about the substance (ex. on internet, in books) that can help you learn more about the substance and whether it is ok to use during pregnancy. Post your findings (along with reviewing the comments before yours) to the discussion board, making sure to include where you got your evidence (ex. link), and how you know this is a source that passes the CRAAP test.
