Discussion #1:

Prompt: Many people think of Christianity as a Western religion that was brought to the rest of the world by European and American missionaries, but the church was flourishing throughout North and East Africa even before it was introduced to most of Europe, and there are more Christians in Africa today than any other continent on earth. What difference might this make for how we, as Westerners, think of our relationship to African Christians today? Identify from the readings at least two things that you think American Christians today have to learn from our African sisters and brothers.

Prompt: Identify the two most important things that you learned about African Christianity, and explain why you think they are important to understand.

Discussion #3:

Prompt: Describe the caste system in India and identify ways that the system runs counter of Christian ideals about love and justice. Then, imagine that you are a missionary who is starting a new church in India, and you must figure out how to address the reality of the caste system. Do you oppose the caste system by creating a church that is open to all people and require converts to renounce their caste and face being cut off from their families, or do you accommodate to the system by starting a church for members of a single caste, such as the Dalits? Explain your choice.
