PSYC San Jose State University Self Management Project Proposal

After reading the pdf on Basic Strategies of Behavior Self-Management, you can begin writing your proposal. For the proposal, you will need to choose at least one target behavior that you want to either increase or decrease the frequency of throughout the semester. This behavior should be overt, meaning that another person would be able to observe the behavior (you do not need anyone to watch, but it should be something another could agree that the behavior occurred).

You will need to be very specific in describing the behavior you want to change. For example, you may want to increase your veggie intake to five out of seven days a week, or spend 30 minutes a day walking outdoors or doing yoga, or decrease your social media use by 15 minutes every day. There are so many options! If you are having trouble coming up with an idea, contact me and we can meet to discuss some potential ideas.

Note that as of now this is a proposal and you should not change your behavior yet! Instead, once you determine your target behavior you should start collecting your baseline data. The baseline data collection phase will allow you to determine how often the behavior is currently occurring. For example, if you want to increase your daily water intake, start keeping track of what you normally drink per day. Baseline data should be collected for a minimum of 10 days, but 14 days is preferred. I will provide more detailed information on the baseline in a separate posting.

In essay format, answer the following questions:

1. What is the target behavior(s) you want to change?

2. Why did you choose the behavior?

3. How will this benefit you? That is, how will this improve your overall quality of life?

4. What are the barriers that prevent or interfere with your ability to do the behavior?

5. What are the specific goals you want to reach?

6. How often do you plan to engage in the behavior?

7. Will you have any permanent products?

8. How will you collect and store your data?

9. When will you start and conclude your baseline phase?

10. What ideas do you have for your intervention?

For this report, you need to include a graph that has both your baseline and intervention data; you should have a phase change line indicating where baseline ends and where intervention begins. Be sure your axes are labeled and the data should be in weeks now instead of days. Also include a narrative of your intervention details. You should have a paragraph at the end discussing how the project is going for you, any positives or negatives you have experienced, and a general update on your progress thus far. Be sure to include an APA-style title page, double-space, and use proper grammar and punctuation.
