Developing effective approaches to research is crucial for success in your Master’s project and in your wider career. In this unit you will explore approaches for theoretically interrogating your practice and your discipline. Throughout this unit you will uncover your research philosophy, defining how you look at the world and your work. You will build and extend your core research capabilities, developing a robust theoretically justified research proposal that you will complete in your Master’s project. In the process of developing your research proposal you will explore a range of research methodologies, methods and approaches, describing how you will utilise primary and secondary research tools in your Master’s project.

You will build a theoretical framework to test your ideas in order to bring you to an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice. Using this framework you will develop research questions for your topic and ensure that the aims of your study are achievable, ethical and sufficiently critical. You will be supported in developing disciplinary specific approaches to your research, discovering opportunities for interdisciplinary exploration in the process.

Assessment and Project Brief
? A 2,500-word proposal for a Master’s project.

An indicative structure for the project proposal structure (2500 words) is suggested below:

Working Title (not included in word count)
? A topic clearly defined by means of a working title.

Your title should describe the content of your work in an adequate way, differentiate your research work from other similar pieces and catch readers’ interest and attention. Please ensure your cover page includes the total word count for your work.

Contents, List of figures (not included in word count) Context and rationale for study (guide 500 words)

  • ?  Definition of key terms, themes or topics.
  • ?  Brief history and development of the main topic to date.
  • ?  Brief synopsis of what the study aims to achieve. Ensure the research gap is clear.
  • ?  Justification for study using academic sources to support views. The rationale shouldclearly articulate why the study is necessary from both academic and industry perspectives.Ensure in your context and rationale, your intended approach is clear, i.e., dissertation, business report or practice-based project.Aim and objectives (guide 150 words)
  • ?  One overarching aim

Ensure your intended approach is clear in the A&O, i.e., dissertation, business report or practice-based project.Preliminary literature review (guide 800 words)
  • ?  Evidence of preliminary review of literature from a range of relevant resources. Please note for dissertation proposals the focus should be on theoretical sources; for business reports and practice-based projects a mix of theoretical and industry sources are appropriate.
  • ?  Drawing on the Venn Diagram (which must be presented in-text) for your study, you are expected to discuss the contributions of other authors within the three core subject areas underlying your research topic, taking a critical approach where possible. In this way you can attempt to build a preliminary theoretical framework for your chosen field of study.
  • ?  You may, if appropriate, attempt to identify one or two research questions/propositions/hypotheses derived from the analysis of the literature, however this is not essential. Please note that conceptual models should not be included at this stage.Proposed Research Design (guide 800 words) 2
  • ?  Include the Research Onion model mapped out for your study at the start of this section.
  • ?  ‘Peel’ the Research Onion – starting with the outer philosophy layer, the approach, choice, strategy and time frame, you should provide detailed discussion and analysis of yourproposed research design, justifying why this approach is the most appropriate for yourproject using relevant literature where appropriate.
  • ?  Discuss how the data will be collected and the propsed sampling method, what instrument/syou plan to utilise and how this data will be analysed using advanced methods (e.g., thematic analysis, statistical analysis using SPSS, etc.) and relevant reliability and validity measures. Critically analyse the suitability of these procedures appropriate to your study using relevant literature where appropriate.
  • ?  Research ethics should be discussed, and reference made to the UAL Code of Practice on Research Ethics (2017).Limitations and further considerations (guide 250 words)

? Taking a critical approach, identify relevant limitations specific to your proposed research design and outline any issues which could have an impact on the intended outcomes of your project.

Reference list (not included in word count)
Using appropriate Harvard Referencing conventions (see Cite Them Right) Appendix (not included in the word count)

  • ?  App. A. Chapter content structure (table format)
  • ?  A brief indicative outline of the content of each chapter using bullet pointed edited sentences.
  • ?  App. B. Critical path (table format)
  • ?  A proposed timetable from start to finish of the final Master’s project, presented as a Ganttchart.
  • ?  Any other essential supporting documents.LCF is an Advanced Signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).
