CSM Market Capitalization Financial Analysis Paper

Case Study #1 is intended to test your knowledge of how to summarize data using pivot tables in Excel using the data file, including using filters and interpreting the results (Case Study 1 – Data File – Fall 2021.xlsx download).

The data file contains US Census Bureau (USCB) population counts for 2010 and 2019 for each of the 50 US states, along with the District of Columbia (DC), with both statewide totals and county level totals, as applicable. The data fields included are as follows:

  • Region – Per the USCB the US is carved into distinct geographic regions
  • Division – Each USCB Region is further carved into distinct geographic divisions
  • State Code – The USCB assigns a unique numeric code for each state and DC
  • County Code – The USCB assigns a unique numeric code for each county within a state
    • County Codes may be duplicated amongst different states
    • County Code = 0 indicates total statewide population from all counties
  • State Name
  • County Name
  • 2010 Population – Population counts per the USCB for 2010
  • 2019 Population – Estimated population counts per the USCB for 2019

After watching the video How to Create Pivot Tables in Excel (Links to an external site.), create the following 8 pivot tables:

  1. Two (2) pivot tables – Total population and count of counties in 2010 and 2019 by Region
  2. Two (2) pivot tables – Total population and count of counties in 2010 and 2019 by Division within each Region
  3. Two (2) pivot tables – Total population and count of counties in 2010 and 2019 by State Name
  4. Do the following for the state you currently reside in:
    1. One (1) pivot table – Total population in 2010 and 2019 listed by County Name
    2. One (1) pivot table – Pick another state to compare the previous pivot table results to and show both in one table (total population in 2010 and 2019 listed County Names)
  5. Provide a brief summary noting the largest and smallest region/division/state from the first three steps and provide a brief summary explaining how the state you currently reside in compares to the other state you chose (# counties, total population counts in both 2010 and 2019, etc.). Summaries can be included in Excel in same worksheet(s) as each pivot table or in a separate worksheet.

Submit a single workbook showing the 8 fully functional pivot tables and the requested summary information.

  • You have been assigned a corporation to analyze in this class. (ASSIGNED CORPORATION IS COLGATE PALMOLIVE)Using the readings and resources provided this week, along with your own research, provide the following information for your assigned corporation:
    • What financial market, NYSE or NASDAQ, is your assigned corporation listed on? Why does it matter?
    • Current Market Capitalization:
      • Using the provided excel template, show the calculation: Market Cap = Shares Outstanding times Stock Price
      • Define Mid-Cap and Large-Cap. Which designation is your corporation?
    • Current Dividend Yield:
      • Using the provided excel template, show the calculation: Dividend Yield = Annual Dividend divided by Stock Price
      • Provide an example of the current savings rate at a bank. Does your corporation pay a higher rate for their dividend yield? Knowing that stocks are riskier than savings accounts, defend or support the current dividend yield. Provide at least ½ page.
    • CEO Pay Trend
      • Provide a five-year trend of the CEO pay for your corporation. In your opinion, in your own words, provide at least one full page that defends or criticizes the trend in CEO pay.
    • Debt to Equity Ratio:
    • What is the debt (bonds) to equity (stocks) ratio of your assigned corporation for the past 5 years (no calculation needed just cite a reliable source)?
    • Using the five-year trend above, what is your assigned corporation’s current condition of the ’right-hand’ side of the balance sheet in terms of total debt to total equity of the firm? In other words, provide and analyze the debt to equity ratio. Provide at least ½ page.
