Response
I think that the purpose of this speech is to raise awareness and possibly raise money for the ICTC to continue their work in the countries that are suffering with limited funds and need more training to help treat trachoma. This isn’t clearly stated by the speaker but as she brings up the personalized stories of the individuals she’s met along the way, along with the resources that are needed, that is the theme I get from the speech. The speaker had a strong opening statement, gave background to what she was discussing, and offered personal insight to what she has learned and experienced, she also added in the work that is being done and the goals of the organization she is with. The main points were presented in a pathos pattern of organization, with addition to the visual aids it makes the audience more compassionate to the issue of which the speaker is presenting. I thought that the speakers’ use of the visual aids worked well all around, I don’t feel as if there could have been an improvement in that area. I feel that the introduction was effective, because the speaker gives you a small sense of what the sufferer goes through when diagnosed with trachoma and it engages the listener at the beginning of the speech. If the speaker would have stated a more clear thesis or purpose to her presentation because the audience doesn’t know if she’s asking for donations, volunteers or sponsors for the organization.
