 The purpose of this discussion is to reflect on your ability to establish a constructive climate.

  • After reading this chapter, how would you explain a constructive climate?
  • What does a leader need to do to establish a constructive climate?
  • Take the Organizational Climate Questionnaire on page 202 in your textbook.  Once you have your results, identify your strengths and weaknesses.
  • In this chapter, group norms are stressed as being very important to effective teams. Do you agree with this? Explain why.  Briefly comment on your own experience with norms in a group. Were you able to adapt to the rules? What challenges did you have? Or what challenges did you witness in the group?
  • Finally, review Table 8.1 – Tips for Giving Constructive Feedback (page 190). Use one of the 5 tips to give someone in your life constructive feedback. Write out what you would tell them in order to provide this feedback.

This chapter discusses the importance of three key skills: administrative skills, interpersonal skills and conceptual skills. Please read the case study at the end of the chapter entitled, “Give Me Shelter.” (Page 114) Once you have read the case study, read and respond to these questions. 

Case Study Questions

  1. First explain how administrative skills are important for leadership, how interpersonal skills are important for leadership, and how conceptual skills are important for leadership. Why do you think the author considers these to be core leadership skills?
  2. Based on the Model of Primary Leadership Skill (Figure 5.1), how would you describe Theo’s skills? In what skills is he the strongest, and in what skills is he the weakest?
  3. What skills did Theo exhibit that made Linda think he would be a good operations manager the first time? What skills did he learn and develop that led her to think he would be a good CEO?
  4. How do you think Theo’s emotional intelligence developed during his career?

The scenario:

Johnston Smith, Associate Director of Sales as Pasedena HVAC Manufacturer, has asked you to calculate the cost of running HVAC units in summer and provide a report.

For this assignment, you will need the following files:

New blank Access database

HVAC_Cooling

You will save your files as:

Lastname_Firstname_HVAC_Cooling

Lastname_Firstname_Cooling_Costs

  1. Open the HVAC_Cooling Excel file, and save the file as Lastname_Firstname_HVAC_Cooling.
  2. Insert your name in the footer.
  3. In the worksheet, insert an Excel table with a header row.
  4. Add a calculated column that calculates the cost of cooling using $0.00124 per Cooling BTU formatted with the Accounting Number Format.
  5. Filter the data to display only one Heating BTU number of your choice.
  6. Apply Best Fit to all columns.
  7. Center the worksheet horizontally on a landscape page.
  8. In Access, create a new database and save it as Lastname_Firstname_Cooling_Costs
  9. Import your Lastname_Firstname_HVAC_Cooling Excel file.
  10. In the table, filter the data to show only data for the Cooling BTU greater than 60,000 and the Power unit of your choice.
  11. Create a report based on your results.
  12. Delete the four measurement fields following the Heating BTU field, and be sure the title fits on one line.
