  • You may not discuss a work of art in more than one of the exam’s questions, i.e. you may discuss any work of art only once in the exam.
  • You may not consult with your section leaders or Professor at any point about the content of the final exam: this is an exam–you are on your own!
  • Any late submission will result in a severe lowering of the grade.
  • Any medical excuse of any kind must come directly from the physician’s office or hospital, although he/she need not detail a medical condition–only that you are incapable of completing the exam on time (no medical excuses will be accepted from a family member).

QUESTIONS: You must select four (4) of the following five questions to answer; each must be 300-400 words long. Each question is worth 25 points.
 
1 SOCIAL HISTORY OF ART: Based on your reading for the course, discuss the similarities and differences of three (3) authors who take an especially strong “social history” approach to their discussions of art in New York, c. 1900-1965. Also, be sure to discuss at least three (3) specific works of art which they analyze.
 
2 AVANT-GARDE: As you now know, New York only gradually became a center of avant-garde artmaking in the 20th century, which had hitherto been a European, and especially Parisian, phenomenon. Briefly discuss three (3) European avant-garde movements (or individual artists) that had an impact on American art, making use of three (3) works of art by Americans which demonstrate that impact.
 
3 HOPPER’S REALISM: The artist Edward Hopper presents a distinctive case of influence, as he was a student of both William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. First, discuss the impact of these two artists on Hopper by comparing one work by Chase and one work by Henri (a total of 2 paintings) to at least one work (1 painting) by Hopper. Then, compare a different painting by Hopper (1 painting) to a work by each of his contemporaries, Reginald Marsh and Thomas Hart Benton (a total of 2 paintings), in order to demonstrate the variety (the distinctive differences) in American realist art of the first half of the twentieth century [you must discuss a total of six works (6) for this question].
 
4 OUTSIDERS: Although many if not most of the artists we have studied this semester are part of what–in an American context–we might think of as an “entitled” group (as, for instance, males of European descent), there are numerous important exceptions to this generality. Discuss the work of three artists (3) whom you would describe as “outsiders,” explaining how their art provides an alternative to, diverges from, or reaffirms dominant cultural attitudes [you must also discuss at least three (3) works of art].
 
5 VENUES:  Exhibitions, galleries, and museums all had seminal roles to play in the development of avant-garde American art in the first half of the twentieth century. Discuss at least three of these venues or events (3) and the ways in which they helped to transform art created in New York City.
