How Family and Friends Influence the Health and Lifestyle of an Individual

Parents and family friends significantly influence the behavior of an individual. For parents, it can be how they raise their children, and for friends, it can result from peer pressure. Human interactions may include messaging a friend to ask for homework help or discussing an individual’s day at dinner (Seeman, 2000). Discussing invisible things such as the desire to belong is challenging. However, it is at the core of human being needs. Human beings need family and friends as pillars of support to thrive. In addition, there are many ways of nurturing a sense of belonging such as early experiences in our families. Further, the support can come from friends who share our interests, values, and concerns. Also, it can be in the form of feeling part of a place, like walking into a coffee shop and someone saying hello. According to Seeman (2000) human interactions go beyond the simple premise that they are suitable for us and necessary for our wellbeing. Relationships are fundamental for our health. The positive aspects include an individual feeling others support them.

Family and friends’ support affect how individuals feel about themselves and what they believe is possible. It is not simply caring for others but boosting their self-esteem and allowing them to care for others. Ross et al (1990) argues that the strongest predictor of mental health after controlling physical health problems is feeling belonging and trust in others. Connecting with our friends and families is critical to the feeling of being included and valued. The feeling of inclusion by our family and friends enhances our sense of purpose and shared identity (Jones et al., 2014). Further, it enables us to cope up easily with stress. Participating in various family and friendship events empowers individuals. Empowerment is a route to address health inequalities. Ross et al (1990) claims that a higher level of support from close family and friends results in a lower heart rate, higher immunity, and lower serum cholesterol.

Additionally, social support resulting from close family ties reduces the chances of the onset of chronic diseases, death, and disability. For instance, marriage provides emotional support and economic security that protect the wellbeing of an individual (UNITE FOR SIGHT, 2021). It results in a low mortality rate and improvement in the physical health of an individual. Married people see doctors frequently for checkups and screenings. Additionally, they are likely to avoid heavy drinking and fatty diets. The available data proves that family and friends support affects important physiologic parameters such as immunity and cardiovascular diseases.

Not all family and friends relationships positively affect health, although good familial relations and social support protect an individual against mortality risks. There are problematic and non-supportive familial relationships that affect the health of an individual negatively (George & Durham, 2016). For instance, poor quality relationships negatively affect the mental and physical health of an individual. Unhappy marriages result in worse physical and mental health problems (UNITE FOR SIGHT, 2021). People in unhappy marriages exhibit more health and physical problems than unmarried persons. Additionally, there is higher depression among spouses in marriages associated with the unequal division of decision-making and power. Further, poor physical health and development can result from an unsupportive, neglectful, and violent home. Therefore, family and friendship ties are the beginning of complex interactions that are vital to our health.
