Grand Canyon University Evidence Based Practice Analysis Paper

I have worked in various roles while employed at the insurance company for almost 8 years. I do know we use EBP when developing our policies and procedures. We have a committee of physicians, nurses, and compliance regulatory employees who review all our policies and procedures annually. I can recall in the past when we used to not cover the 3D portion of the mammograms when some of the providers started doing 3D as opposed to the old 2D. So if you wanted the 3D as a patient, you would cover the extra portion. After having enough evidence-based research that shows the benefit of 3D mammograms, we then changed our policy and have been covering them for a few years at 100%.

When I worked OB in the hospital, they also use EBP to guide the policies and procedures. We had a committee consisting of nurses in all areas of the hospital, floor nurses, charge nurses, and nurse managers who met monthly. We also had a few physicians who would attend, but most of the staff attending were nurses. One of the initiatives we instituted was kangaroo care or skin to skin contact between the newborn and mom or dad after each delivery. If mom had complications, we would bring the baby to the nursery, and we would have dad do skin to skin with the baby. We found our newborns had improved temperature regulation in the first 24 hours when using skin to skin versus our traditional newborn warmers, which matches the study from Nimbalkar et al., 2014.
