Communication is key within the world of public health. Two public speaking methods include informative and persuasive speaking; informative speaking deals with presenting facts and information to an audience, whereas persuasive speaking deals with motivating or creating a call to action within the audience (Types of Public Speaking, 2021). An example of informative public health speaking engagement includes COVID-19 progress briefings by federal, state, and local health officials. These meetings help community members understand the information that is being presented and allow for an open dialogue between all parties involved. This type of public speaking can have both a positive and negative impact depending on the information being conveyed to community members. Alternatively, an example of a persuasive public speaking meeting includes a grant hearing or a nongovernmental organization meeting to gain funds. During this type of engagement, one group of individuals is trying to persuade another by using data and information but ultimately will gain traction by connecting with their target audience. Again, this type of public speaking can have both a positive and negative impact. Being able to disseminate between positive and negative information is a skill all people need to learn. Over the last year and a half, the world has learned what the power of misinformation can have on communities, public health, and life as we know it. If the people in charge at the start of the pandemic were more transparent and honest about the information and accurate public health prevention strategies, then the way this pandemic was handled may have been completely different. The mistrust and distrust within health officials have unfortunately hindered the United States’ ability to fight the pandemic.
