HIMS 650 United Medical & Dental College Week 6 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Responses
Need help with my Health & Medical question – I’m studying for my class.
Hi, please respond to the peer discussion below with a minimum of 2 references in APA style ( 100 words minimum)
Peer 1:
I worked part-time in the Rehab department of a clinic, and there I witnessed a high prevalence of patients coming in with the disease Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). I thought it would be a good study since it is pretty common among people, primarily the occupational or workgroups. People who thronged the clinic complained of pain, numbness, and tingling in the upper extremities. Higher widespread CTS is identified in workgroups, but it is challenging to interpret prevalence rates (Atroshi, Gummesson & Johnsson, 1999).
The question that kept rushing through my mind was how repetitive movements affected the employee’s chance of acquiring Carpal Tunnel syndrome (CTS).
Carpal tunnel is a nerve entrapment syndrome that frequently occurs where a nerve changes its course around a fibrous or muscular band (American Journal of Epidemiology, 1990). It is an increasing cause of work disability, and it constitutes a significant part of occupational infirmities and is associated with indemnity and healthcare costs (Atroshi, Gummesson & Johnsson, 1999).
Aside from other variables such as interest, is the SMART way, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound (Curtis & Drennan, 2013). These parameters serve as a guide in starting the research problem or question to ensure success in research. The research designs popularly utilized by researchers include Observational, Experimental, Simulation, and Derived.
If I undertake research, I will employ a quantitative research method applying the Observational (Cross-sectional) approach and utilize questionnaires for data gathering. My study will be a descriptive one that will not call for experiments. The questionnaire will include open-ended questions and capture information such as gender, age, demographic status, and medical conditions of the randomly selected participants. The data will group as categorical, ordinal, and numerically analyzed with the SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). The analysis will include descriptive measures like the mean, mode, max, min, median with bar graph diagrams. Perhaps I will do a regression analysis and a chi-square analysis to test the strength of the relationship of the variables and a t-test at a 5% confidence interval.

Applied Research:
“Applied research answers the questions “What?” and “How?” and focuses on the implementation of theories into practice” (Watters, 2020 Ch.18).
Background on PCOS:
According to Mayo clinic Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone levels (Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), 2020). Most women that have PCOS deal with complications regarding obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes or are pre diabetics (Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), 2020).
Scenario:
There has been evidenced proofed data rendered that supports Metformin’s ability to reduce symptoms and some of the presented complications. Per Mayo Clinic Metformin is used to treat high blood sugar levels, specifically type 2 (Metformin, 2021). In the same manner that Metformin can improve insulin sensitivity it is expected that it will lessen or better yet resolve PCOS (Lashen, 2010). Through applied research the aim is to find out: How long does it take for Metformin to start relieving PCOS symptoms? In addition, once under control can altered lifestyle functioning assure a patient will be able to transition off metformin and maintain the same results?
Research question:
How long does it take for Metformin to start relieving PCOS symptoms? In addition, once under control can altered lifestyle functioning assure a patient will be able to transition off metformin and maintain the same results?
Considerations:
Can the proposed question be answered via measured research and how will it take place? What is described in the question that how will be through a clinical trial that will be comprised of several individuals that are only diagnosed with PCOS with allowances on diabetes 2 onset following PCOS diagnosis. The information gathered should be able to answer the question and provide data support such.
